Pfeiffer Women Remain Perfect in USA South Play With 1-0 Win Over Salem

Misenheimer, N.C. (Oct. 9, 2019) –
One goal off the foot of sophomore Kelsey Esquivel was the difference as the Pfeiffer University women's soccer team won their fourth consecutive match, downing visiting Salem College 1-0 on a beautiful fall evening at Lefko Field.

Early in the first half Salem took control into their offensive side of the field, uncorking a shot just 44 seconds into the match.  Pfeiffer would then push back, this time working the ball into the Spirit defensive zone, eventually earning a pair of corner kicks.

After trading multiple shots, Pfeiffer's Esquivel, entered the game as a substitution and a little over a minute into the match, she found the back of the Salem net.

The scoring play was setup as the Falcons earned their third corner kick of the match.  Sophomore Mackenzie Pruitt (Havelock, N.C.) sent the kick from the left corner into the far right side of side of the box where Esquivel, a product of Charlotte, N.C., collected and sent a shot into the right side of the goal at 24:19, scoring her fifth goal of the season.

In the second half, Salem had a few chances to score the tying goal, with their best opportunity coming on a Brianna Monroe shot in the 69th minute.

Pfeiffer then looked add to their lead, but sophomore Cayci Eaton's (Harrisburg, N.C.) shot in the 76th minute went wide of the Salem goal.

The Spirits threatened just once more the remainder of the match, with Alyssa Dentkovich delivering a shot that Pfeiffer goalkeeper Kaley Hyatt (St. Cloud, Fla.) had little trouble with in making the save in the 84th minute.

Pfeiffer then controlled their defensive zone and allowed no further threats from Salem in taking the 1-0 win.

The Falcons improve to 8-3 on the year and remain perfect in USA South play at 4-0 while Salem drops to 6-5-1 and 2-2 in league play.

Pfeiffer returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 12 with a 2:00 p.m. home matchup with Mary Baldwin at Lefko Field.
