Roanoke Scores Late Goal to Sink Pfeiffer Women's Soccer

Misenheimer, N.C. –
Visiting Roanoke College scored in the 84th minute to take a 2-1 win over the Pfeiffer University women's soccer team on a sunny and hot Saturday afternoon at Lefko Field.

The Maroons got on the board first when Lucy Perry laced a shot off a free kick from 20-yards out that just went wide of the outstretched hands of Pfeiffer goalkeeper Kaley Hyatt (St. Cloud, Fla.).

A little under 25-minutes later, Pfeiffer's offensive attack was rewarded a penalty kick when a cross hit a Roanoke defender in the hand inside the box.

Sophomore Mackenzie Pruitt (Havelock, N.C.) took the penalty shot and clanged the crossbar, sending the ball straight up into the air.  In the impending scramble for the ball, Roanoke goalkeeper Chris Martin got a hand on the ball, but was unable to control it.  Pruitt then was able to punch it into the net to deadlock the match at 1-1.

After halftime, Pfeiffer dominated the Maroon defense by holding possession for a majority of the half, but was unable to find the go-ahead goal.

Roanoke finally broke the Falcon pressure and while playing the ball in the midfield, Emma Woods uncorked a shot from around 30 yards out that sailed over the fingertips of Hyatt in the 84th minute that gave Roanoke the eventual 2-1 winning margin.

The even-matched teams nearly mirrored each other, as Pfeiffer had 13 shots to Roanoke's 11.  Pfeiffer also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Roanoke improves to 6-2 overall while Pfeiffer drops to 4-3.

Pfeiffer will be on the road for their next three matches, with the first being a USA South tilt with Methodist on Saturday, Sept. 28.  Kickoff in Fayetteville, N.C. is slated for 6:00 p.m.
