BANNER ELK, N.C. - Hannah Hill's goal in the 48th minute proved to be the winner as the Pfeiffer women's soccer team (4-4, 2-1 CC) defeated Lees-McRae (2-4, 2-1) by a final score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Brae Buster accounted for the other Pfeiffer score and Kaitlin Sampson was credited with the assist on Hill's winner.
Deidre Gilley earned the start in net and made six saves to earn her first career win.
Shots were even at 16 apiece in the conference battle but the Falcons held a 7-2 margin in corner kicks over the Bobcats.
Buster broke through in the 12th minute with her fourth goal of the season and 14th of her career. The sophomore retrieved a loose ball after the Bobcats keeper fell, and put it in to the open net to give the Falcons the upper hand. However, Lees-McRae countered with a score of their own exactly five minutes later as Cheyenne Warrick found Kelsey Twigg for her third goal of the season. The half ended with the Falcons holding a 9-6 lead in shots.
Hill found the back of the net just 2:21 into the second half. Sampson's cross found the right foot of Hill who fired it into the back of the net from 15 yards out. Lees-McRae took 10 second half shots but Gilley and the Pfeiffer defense held strong.
Freshman Gretchen Dettlinger finished the afternoon with four shots and three shots on goal. Katlyn Stevens fired three shots in the contest.
The Falcons are back in action on Wednesday as they begin a three-match homestand starting with Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m.
