MISENHEIMER, N.C. - A pair of goals by senior Alyssa Wombwell (Grand Blanc, MI), including the game-winner in the 89th minute, propelled Pfeiffer University past Catawba College 2-1 in non-conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon. The physical contest with 26 combined fouls and five yellow cards saw the Lady Falcons improve to 2-4 on the year while the Lady Indians drop to 1-5.
With just under two minutes to play in regulation, Catawba was whistled for their 13th and final foul of the match setting up a Pfeiffer free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Wombwell fired her attempt through traffic and inside the left post for the eventually game-winner.
Wombwell also gave the hosts momentum heading into the intermission with the game-tying goal at the end of the first half's 43rd minute. Freshman Hannah Hill (Monroe, NC) delivered a touch pass down the middle to Wombwell who then fired above Catawba keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA) top right corner for the match equalizer.
Earlier in the period during the 19th minute, Catawba put home their lone goal for the match with Kristin Girardi's (Asheville, NC) second of the season. After a Brittany Gibbons (Woodleaf, NC) steal at midfield, Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC) sent the in-box cross over to Girardi who went left post for the goal.
Catawba led the shots category 17-7 overall, 7-4 on goal. Britt Polly (Boca Raton, FL) came in to make five second-half saves in the victory for Pfeiffer. Webster made two saves on the day for the Lady Indians.
Pfeiffer returns to Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday afternoon hosting Barton at N.E. Lefko Field. The second league tilt of the season for the Lady Falcons will begin at 2:00 p.m. with live stats being available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
