Misenheimer, N.C. (Jan. 18, 2020) – Averett University used a big third quarter en route to a 64-57 USA South women's basketball win over Pfeiffer University on Saturday afternoon at Merner Gym.

After being down 30-26 at halftime, the visiting Cougars built their lead to as many as nine points (42-33 after a pair of Brooke Carthon free throws at the 2:10 mark.

Pfeiffer battled back to tie the game at 44-44 in the fourth quarter after A'Mya McClain (Hickory, N.C.) converted a pair of free throws at 8:18.  A Regan Allen (Olin, N.C.) three-pointer put Pfeiffer up 47-44, but Averett answered with a three-pointer from Kiara Smith to tie it once again at 47-47.

With Pfeiffer leading 54-53, Averett regained the lead for good when Carthon gathered her own miss and converted a layup while getting fouled.  Her free throw was good, giving Averett the 56-54 lead, one that they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Back-to-back baskets from Averett pushed the lead to 62-57 and two Carthon free throws with 16 seconds remaining provided the eventual 64-57 final.

Pfeiffer struggled through a difficult shooting night, going just 19-of-64 from the field (29.7%).  Averett didn't fare much better, shooting 38.1% on a 24-of-63 outing.

Carthon lead all scorers for the Cougars, as she finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds while teammate Ravyn Johnson scored 14 points while collecting nine rebounds.  Courtney Scott also had 11 points for Averett.
