Pfeiffer Women's Basketball Gets Overtime Win at Hollins
Roanoke, Va. (Nov. 10, 2019) – The Pfeiffer University women's basketball team got off to a quick start and outlasted Hollins College 80-7 4 in overtime to claim their first win of the 2019-20 season.
The Falcon defense kept Hollins off the board for almost the first three minutes of the game until Hollins tied the game at 3-3. The Falcons then were able to build a four point lead at 7-3 following a pair of Kortni Pinion (Stanfield, N.C.) free throws and a jumper at 6:34.
Tied at 13-13, Hollins claimed their first lead of the game at 14-13 with 52 seconds left in the quarter, but Pfeiffer quickly jumped back ahead on a Brina Bentley (Chester, Va.) three pointer with 17 seconds left. Bentley would then hit a free throw to provide the 17-14 lead after the first.
The two teams traded points to start the second frame until back to back baskets from Hollins' Yasmine Tyler tied the game. HU and Pfieffer would combine for just three points in the next four minutes until Kayla Surles hit another three, giving Hollins a 27-25 lead.
The Falcons would tie it again after a jumper from A'Mya McClain (Hickory, N.C.), but a pair of Tyler free throws gave the Green and Gold a 29-28 halftime lead.
Pfeiffer came out firing to start the third, going on a 15-4 run and taking a 43-33 lead. Hollins cut the deficit to eight with a layup, but Pfeiffer kept the lead to at least nine until late in the quarter.
With just over two minutes remaining, HU converted a layup and a free throw to cut lead to seven, giving Hollins a more manageable deficit to start the fourth.
In the fourth, Hollins embarked on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 55-55.
Hollins then knocked down a three-pointer with 28 seconds to go to knot the game at 68-68. Pfeiffer then turned the ball over with 23 seconds left but the game-winning three-point attempt by HU was off the mark, sending the game into overtime.
The extra period, however, belonged to the Falcons a as Pfeiffer outscored HU 12-6 in the OT period to pick up the win.
Brina Bentley led the way for Pfeiffer, finishing with 29 points on an 8-of-11 shooting effort that included four three-pointers. Pinion finished with a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds while McClain had 14 points.
As a team, Pfeiffer shot 45.8% (27-of-59) from the field and was 7-of-14 (50%) from long range.
Pfeiffer will return to Merner Gym on Tuesday, Nov. 12 to take on Johnson & Wales in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
