BELMONT, N.C. – The Pfeiffer Falcons (6-12, 5-9 CC) knocked off the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (7-13, 6-8 CC) 68-64 behind double figures from four of their five starters. Pfeiffer was lead by junior guard Meg Pritchard with 18 points and eight rebounds.
After a shaky first quarter that saw the Falcons shoot 25% from the field, Pfeiffer came out on fire in the second as they shot 67% from the field and 80% from the three point range.
At 5:07 left in the second quarter sophomore Safia Sheikh hit on her third three point field goal of the quarter as it capped of an 11-4 run to give Pfeiffer a 30-25 lead.
After back-to-back made shots by the Crusaders Gabrielle Bethel and Alex Busch, Pfeiffer saw their lead begin to evaporate. Pfeiffer Head Coach Tooey Loy called a timeout and drew up a play for the final shot of the quarter. Pritchard drew that assignment as she hit the jumper with no time left on the clock and giving the Falcons a 40-36 going into the third quarter.
In the third quarter, it wasn't about Pfeiffer's offense but more about their defense. The Falcon defenders held Belmont Abbey to 4-for-15 shooting and causing five Crusader turnovers. The Falcons ended the quarter on top, 56-47.
In the fourth quarter, the Crusaders continued to rally after the tough second quarter. Belmont Abbey held Pfeiffer to only seven shots from the field but Pritchard extended the Falcon lead as she hit for Pfeiffer's first five points of the quarter for a 61-50 lead. Sophomore point guard Brianna Jones closed out the game hitting on the Falcons last seven points of the quarter but the Pfeiffer defense continued cause the Crusaders havoc as they turned the ball over four more times down the final stretch to preserve a 68-64 win.
The Falcons saw Jones with 14 points and 12 from Sheikh and Ariana Tillman.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, February 6th as they travel to North Greenville for a Conference Carolinas game that is scheduled to tip at 2:00 p.m.
