MISENHEIMER, N.C. - In their 2014-15 season opener, the Pfeiffer women's basketball team (0-1, 0-1 CC) fell at home to Mount Olive (2-1, 1-0) by a final score of 68-49 on Wednesday evening. Meg Pritchard recorded a double-double in her Pfeiffer debut, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Safia Sheikh scored 16 points off the bench for the Falcons.
Pfeiffer had trouble with the Trojans interior game as center Arieal Johnson had 17 points and nine rebounds and Mount Olive held an 18-4 advantage in second chance points. Ty Wallace finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and two steals for Mount Olive and Ni'ya Styles had 13 points and four assists.
Sheikh accounted for all four of Pfeiffer's three pointers on the evening, shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc. Carlisha Holivay added eight points and Carter Williams netted six for the Falcons.
Both teams started out cold as Pfeiffer held a 6-4 lead nearly nine minutes into the first half. Unfortunately, it was the Falcons last lead of the evening as Mount Olive used a 17-0 run to take command. Mount Olive pushed the lead to as much as 18 in the first half and took a 33-16 lead into the break.
Pfeiffer refused to give in despite trailing by 22 in the second half and an 11-6 run cut the lead to 54-43 as Dajea Scott finished a layup in the paint with 5:40 to play. However, Pfeiffer couldn't claw any closer as the Trojans collected the pivotal conference victory.
Wallace had 12 points and 10 boards at halftime for the Trojans and Styles recorded 11 of her 13 points in the final 20 minutes.
The Falcons will return to action on Sunday as they travel to Montreat for a 2 p.m. clash.
