MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Strong pitching bailed out some cold bats as the No. 9 Pfeiffer softball team (31-3) swept Tuesday's doubleheader against Winston Salem St. (7-21) at Jack Ingram Field. Pfeiffer pitchers allowed only one run on the day and held the Rams to just nine hits and won by scores of 1-0 and 4-1.
The Falcons were stymied by Mercedes Hargett in game one as the senior righty had a perfect game into the seventh inning. With one out, Stephanie Fortner became the first Falcon to reach as an error by the shortstop put her on base. Rachel Crowder drew a walk and freshman Makenzie Pennell recorded Pfeiffer's only hit of the game, a run scoring single to left that brought home Fortner for the walkoff win.
Kiana Millsaps improved to 6-0 in the circle and allowed only four hits and three walks. The sophomore struck out nine and wiggled out of trouble in the sixth and seventh innings. Millsaps got out of a bases loaded jame in the sixth and put two runners on to start the seventh but was able to escape with her second complete game shutout of the year.
Vada Blue Sherrill crushed a 3-run home run in the bottom of the third in game two, which was all the offense Pfeiffer would need. Pfeiffer finished the game with eight hits and handed Chyna Riley her fourth loss of the season.
Sherrill added two stolen bases and Millsaps went 2-for-2 and also picked up her first career save by retiring the final three batters of the game.
The Falcons return to action on Friday as they travel to Erskine for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
