MISENHEIMER, NC- The Pfeiffer men's basketball team (13-10, 9-8 CC) used a big second half to run away with a crucial Conference Carolinas matchup against Barton (12-13, 8-9 CC) on Saturday night. Pfeiffer outscored the Bulldogs 57-35 in the final period to come away with an 86-64 victory and sweep the season series.
Mike Smith led the way with a game-high 24 points as Pfeiffer shot 67.7 percent from the floor in the second half and went 54.5 percent from behind the arc. Rob Folk had five of the Falcons nine blocks in the contest and Keith Jumper added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The sweep was the first time Pfeiffer went unbeaten in a season against Barton since 1999. The win was also notable because it marks the program's highest win total in a single season since winning 19 games in 2009-10.
Daniel McClendon was the biggest offensive threat for the Bulldogs scoring 12 points on 3-for-9 shooting. The Falcons stingy defense held Barton to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor, and 15.4 percent from three point land.
Pfeiffer started the second half on an 18-8 run to take a 47-37 lead. AJ Clark had a huge second half scoring 17 of his 19 points in the period. Pfeiffer hit 9 threes in the second half including back-to-back threes by Smith and Clark.
Andrew Guerrero scored 17 points and was 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and dished out three helpers.
Pfeiffer controlled the paint, outscoring Barton 40-22 in the lane and turned 15 offensive rebounds into 15 second chance points.
Pfeiffer travels to Central, SC on Wednesday, February 18 for a matchup with Southern Wesleyan. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
