The Bobcats jumped on the board first about half way through the opening period with an unassisted goal by Kyle Ficken (Brooklyn Park, MN). Wes McMahon (Olney, MD) responded two minutes later to get Pfeiffer its first score. Kevin Anderson (Altamonte Springs, FL) notched the assist on the play, which would be the first of his two for the day. Bobcat Derin Vacca (Wake Forest, NC) and Falcon Chad Olsen (Great Mills, MD) added another goal for each of their respective teams before the end of the first period.
Jameson Schultz (High Point, NC) opened up the second period scoring for Pfeiffer with the man advantage. Dan Melser (Penn Yan, NY) assisted on the goal and would go on to notch two goals for himself in the third and fourth periods. Lees-McRae then went on a three goal run spanning the second and third periods, but Pfeiffer responded with its own three to match. Two of the Falcon goals were scored in man-up situations. Pfeiffer led at the end of the third, 6-5.
The intensity level of the game rose as Bobcat Matt Markey (Burlington, NC) put an unassisted goal past Falcon keeper Jimmy Dyches (Abingdon, MD) three minutes into the final period. Pfeiffer responded with two more goals in the next five minutes, but the Bobcats refused to back down. Vacca put Lees-McRae back within one with 50 seconds left in regulations. Despite strong defensive efforts on Pfeiffer’s part, Neil Sleight (Warners, NY) took advantage of a man-up opportunity and kept the dream alive for Lees-McRae by scoring the game-tying goal with an assist by Ficken in the last 29 seconds of the game.
The teams were deadlocked in the first four-minute overtime period. Pfeiffer’s Devon Rockey (Charlotte, NC) won the faceoff of the second overtime period, lobbed the ball to Anderson, who then passed to Shawn Cross (Cranberry Township, PA) and assisted Olsen, who proceeded to make quick work of putting the ball past Bobcat keeper Andy Nesdill (Phoenix, AZ). After seven seconds of the second overtime period, Pfeiffer won with the golden goal.
Leading the Falcons was Cross who marked a hat trick on the day and also tallied one assist to make four points. Mesler followed with a three point day on two goals and one assist. Olsen chipped in two goals, one being the game winner in double overtime.
Vacca scored two goals for the Bobcats and Ficken marked on goal and one assist, each tallying two points.
The Falcons outshot the Bobcats 42-26 and won the battle of the ground balls 38-22.
