Pfeiffer Baseball Splits Double-Header Against Averett; Takes Series 2-1

Danville, V.A. -- The Pfeiffer baseball team split a double header on Saturday afternoon against Averett, taking game one 7-4 and losing game two 2-0. Despite the loss in game two, the Falcons won the series two games to one as they took Friday night's matchup buy a score of 8-2.

Game One:

Pfeiffer got a solid performance on the mound from starter Matthew Lambert, who went 5 innings while giving up 6 hits and 1 run (0 earned) and striking out 6 Cougar hitters. The Falcons also got a solid game out of their bullpen, but late inning errors allowed Averett to climb back in the game.

The Falcons had a 3-1 lead going in to the bottom of the 8th inning when the Pfeiffer defense opened the door for the Cougars' comeback. Third baseman Bryan Kowalski booted a ball with two outs to keep the inning alive, and the very next play Peyton Williams made a wild throw to set up two men in scoring position. A Kyle Vidano walk for Averett would load the bases in front of the two hole hitter Dallas Smithers. Smithers ripped a ball to center field to clear the bases and give the Cougars a one run lead heading in to the 9th.

The Falcons wouldn't give in, however, as Kyler Fairchild would hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the 9th inning with one out to score Christian Marciano and tie the game at 4. Williams would pitch a shutout bottom half of the inning to take the game to extras.

With two out in the 10th, Kirby Lambert came up to the plate looking to do damage and give Pfeiffer the lead again. With Xavier Rodriguez on first base, Lambert cranked one to right field to give the Falcons a 6-4 lead. Two batters later, Kowalski singled to right-center field to score Marciano to put Pfeiffer ahead by three.

Rodriguez would take the mound in the bottom of the 10th and shut the door to seal the victory. Rodriguez gave up 0 hits and struck out 2.

Game Two:

Game two was a pitcher's duel started by lefty Will Altemueller for the Falcons and Cole Spain for Averett. Despite being tagged with the loss, Altemueller went 6.2 innings giving up 7 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) and struck out 3.

Spain had it working for the Cougars, shutting out the vanuted Pfeiffer offense by striking out 10 and giving up just 3 hits in 7.1 innings. Ryan Taylor would come in in relief and earn the save.

The Falcons could only collect 4 hits on the afternoon while striking out a total of 12 times. Derek Perry went 1-3 with a walk on the contest, while Chaston Gordon collected 2 hits for the game.

Averett had three players come through with 2 hits each, including lead off man Kyle Vidano who went 2-5 with one run scored.

Pfeiffer will hit the field again when they travel to St. Andrews for a makeup game on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
